Logging Food with the Camera Module in Hexis

How to log food fast and accurately using photo recognition and barcode scanning.

Want to log food without typing it in? The camera module lets you log meals using photo recognition or barcode scanning, so you can fuel accurately without slowing down.

What the camera module does

The camera module in Hexis lets you log food using photo recognition and barcode scanning. It's designed to remove friction from food logging while keeping accuracy high.

Accessing the camera module

  1. Open your Fuel Plan and select a carb code (your colour-coded meal slot).

  2. This opens the food database, where you'll see a barcode scanning icon. Tap it to open the camera module.

The two scanning modes

The camera module has two modes:

  • Photo recognition - for whole foods, simple items, and full plates.

  • Barcode scanning - for packaged products with labelled nutrition information.

Using photo recognition

Photo recognition works well for single food items and clean presentations, and can also identify the individual components of a mixed plate - useful when you're not logging each ingredient by hand, like when eating out.

  1. Place the food within the camera viewfinder, making sure it's clearly visible and well lit. The white frame guides help you centre the item.

  2. Capture the photo. Within seconds, Hexis processes the image and returns a result - for example, identifying a banana along with its calorie value, or breaking a mixed plate down into its separate components.

  3. If a match isn't quite right, alternative matches are shown so you can select the correct one.

  4. Once identified, you can edit the quantity of any component or add additional foods that weren't picked up in the photo, so the entry matches what you actually ate.

If you'd rather describe a meal in your own words instead, voice logging is also available.

Logging food when you're eating out

The camera module is a fast way to log food when you're away from home:

  • Single items - a piece of fruit, a pastry, a snack — get identified directly, just as they would at home.

  • Packaged items with a barcode - a shop-bought sandwich, a bottled drink - can still be scanned even when you're out.

  • Mixed plates - a curry, a stir-fry, a plate with several components - can be photographed, and Hexis will identify each component separately. From there, you can edit the quantity of anything that's off and add anything the photo missed, giving you an accurate log even for a meal you didn't prepare yourself.

Using barcode scanning for packaged foods

  1. Flip the product over to find the barcode and position it within the camera view.

  2. Hexis scans the barcode and pulls up nutrition data specific to that exact product - removing guesswork around ingredients and portion sizes.

Note: occasionally, nutrition data for branded products may differ slightly from the packaging, since some entries draw on third-party databases that aren't always fully up to date. If you spot a mismatch, let us know so we can get it corrected.

Tip: if you scan a food regularly, favourite it once you've added it — see Food Tracking for how, and it'll be much faster to find the next time you log it.

If a product doesn't scan or isn't found, you can create it yourself as a custom food with your own nutrition values - see Food Tracking for a walkthrough of setting one up in My Foods.

Adding scanned foods to your log

  1. Once your food is identified, tap the plus icon to add it to your food log.

  2. Edit the quantity if required.

Adjusting portion sizes

After scanning, you can adjust the portion to match what you actually ate. If Hexis defaults to 100g but you had 120g, move the portion slider up or down - this keeps your fuelling accurate without slowing down the processing.
